The Omaha Factor

Wednesday continued
Right home had some lunch to pick up Joyce and off to Omaha.
Sheryl and Michael’s house is just perfect. It is going to be great fun.
Katie and Mia arrived not long after us.
First in best beds.
Heem (Andy Yavasis) is coming up from Wellington on Thursday, staying at Michael and Sheryl’s home. We the (Wrightson extended family) are in their rental property.
What fun!
We entertained Sheryl and Michael pre dinner. The raspberry vodka took a fair beating…in fact was our first empty bottle for “The Bin of Shame”.
Consequently 2 people(mainly men) were fairly cheerful. I think the next morning will be interesting. Joyce made her fish dish with new potatoes. Delicious.

Thursday
An early morning rush to buy papers for the puzzle maniacs. Then off to buy coffee and fresh bread. Also got beautiful steak from local butcher in Matakana. He is a real butcher i.e. he has a big butchers block in the middle of the shop and cuts the meat as you require.
Just bread and salad…make your own sandwiches for lunch.
Chris arrived and Mike Sherl and Heem came round for a quick drink. And it was.
After the steak and roast summer vege dinner, (Joyce made rosemary potatoes) as we were relaxing in front of the telly Neil and Nikki arrived from Whangarei, the place is filling up. They then got first pick of downstairs bedrooms. They deserve the biggest they have been squashing themselves into small beds, couches airbeds, everything. They were thrilled with the king size bed. So the medium and small Wrightsons have scored all the bunks.
They look pretty good though don’t you think?

Friday morning
Beautiful day, Joyce and I walked.
After a morning of double papers for the puzzle maniacs Katie and I went shopping n Warkworth. Great butcher and fish and chip shop, nice little boutiques, Kiwi beach favourite

Sausage on the BBQ. Chef Neil cooked up fresh corn, tossed with oil, chili and lime juice, made panzanella with our left over bread he dried out in the sun.

The produce up here is sensational. Katie made coleslaw. As a wee pregnant person there is occasionally an issue with some foods and all alcoholic drinks. Got our designated driver though. Lucky us! All the active people went to the beach.

Now here’s some sights you don’t often get to see!

But I digress.
Drinks at Michael and Sherl’s…so lovely and hot we started off on the deck

and we ended up in the sand dunes.

Good luck for me a bird shat on my arm. That bikini T-Shirt sure attracts a lot of attention.

Sherl’s new bike got a lot of attention as well

Home to find Dan, Helen Sophia and Joseph had arrived.

Joyce cooked her fish dish accompanied by rice Biriani style, layers of rice, buttercup squash, onions and courgettes baked in the oven.

There was a loud game of 30 seconds played by the under 40s before retiring.

Saturday
Another boomer day. So hot in the morning.
Beach, surf, boogie boards…the little kids just loved it.
Beer o’clock before lunch

Leftovers for lunch Fish and Rice cakes served with Neil’s corn salsa and chipotle sauce plus aioli made with smoked garlic from the Farmers Market, all preceded by Dan’s Bruschetta topped with local albacore tuna cooked in a jar with vinegar and spices.
Quite superb. Back to the beach while we were away Lucy arrived in time for poker on the deck.

While we waited for The Glams to arrive Sophia organised a wonderful fashion parade.
The kids love all this drama. Sophia is such a leader. It is so funny. The press was there.
To record this wondrous event.

You can see the preparation that goes into it. Some customers relaxing before the parade and yet another rare sight...

Sherl had delivered to the house earlier a huge snapper that Neil cooked in foil with peppers and onions…it didn’t last long.

The children were having a nice quiet time with their Grandfather?

Who is the adult here?

Andy arrived first on his bike
But we had to wait for Mike and Sherl who were at a function.
They finally arrived but one of them didn’t actually make dinner. Extremely cheerful then a bit tired and emotional. So she was taken home which was good excuse to pick up the Team America DVD. Dan made his superb burgers, we had fresh beetroot from Sherl’s mothers garden along with red onion, tomato and plastic cheese. WOW.
Helen completed this feast with her famous Coconut Cake to celebrate Dan’s upcoming birthday.

There was rugby and some went to bed, some snored through the rugby…the gallant few watched, then Michael put on his piece de resistance “Team America”.
Lots of hilarity, Andy jumped up and raced off on his bike an interesting exercise and the snorers woke up, and went to bed.

Sunday
Cloudy, windy but warm. Neil and Nikki left early they had an appointment with racing cars. Brad arrived. Scrabble was played then lunch of sausages, salad and white bread.
Luckily a bottle of Grandma’s tomato sauce had been brought up to enhance the pantry.

Everyone then settled in to the entertainment of the day.
The Cooking Contest……….Ready Steady Cook

Sophia devised score cards, Mia and JB decorated them aren’t they neat?

Lucy took off and a trip to the beach. The kids were in the water for hours.
Joyce Helen and I went for a walk along the beach. Home to more Scrabble while the kids ate Fish and Chips unfortunately for Katie I volunteered to go shopping and scraped her car. The Glams and Andy over for a pre dinner wine.
Dan, Helen, Sops and JB took off and the dwindling mob sat down to Pizza and movies.

Monday
Cloudy...rubbish day.
It is common to hang the rubbish bags in the trees plus look at those “Bin’s of Shame”
Note the collection lads.

Chris left and the puzzle maniacs were busy.
Seeing as it was cloudy we went to Leigh Sawmill for lunch. Very nice food, real chips. Dale and Mia had the Kid’s Fish and Chips. Pizza for Katie, Beef salad for Joyce and I had tempura prawns. Did a little tiki tour for Joyce and home.
Katie and Mia left. It was an excellent day for washing so the line was full, of sheets pillow cases and towels. 13 people use a lot of linen. Nice sheets Sherl.
I made a big vege soup/stew with all the remaining vege, little chili, packet of onion soup, ½ tin baked beans. Tasted great.

“Jarhead” the movie, bit rough to watch…bed.

Last Day Tuesday
The sun is out, the cicadas are singing its lovely, what a pity we are leaving.
Mind you if it had been hot and fine every day all the puzzles and games would never have been done.
Good day though for the remainder of washing. There was a couple of dramas removing the Sky decoder but we finally were packed and out of there.

Lunch at Bridge House Pub excellent chips again, once more, very good food.
Have to get ready for departure to Napier on Friday. More adventures.
Quote of the Year from Dale (Whilst sleep talking)

“Old people chew 2000 times…Imagine old people with no mouths”
Where did that come from?
